Net Lights vs String Lights for Commercial Hedges and Shrubs

At hotel entrances, along shopping streets and around shopping centres, lighting does more than illuminate plants. It helps connect landscaped areas with nearby buildings, pedestrian routes and seasonal displays.

The difference between net lights and string lights is not simply how they are installed. Net lights lend themselves to a regular pattern; string lights allow more freedom to vary spacing and density. Choose according to the planting, the intended appearance and the installation team’s experience—not the assumption that one format is always better.

Decide between a regular pattern and a freer composition

Net lights connect light points into a mesh with a relatively regular visual rhythm. For neatly shaped hedges that need a consistent appearance, consider a net-light sample and check whether its dimensions fit the surfaces you want to cover.

String lights do not impose a fixed grid. Their route and density can be varied as part of the design. In HYCLight’s project experience, we tend to favour string lights for landscaped areas: deliberate changes in density can create a less rigid composition with more visual depth.

However, freedom does not mean placing lights at random. A varied composition takes aesthetic judgement and practical experience. Without these, the result can include concentrated bright patches, unintended gaps or adjoining areas that do not work together. For a less experienced team seeking an orderly pattern, appropriately sized net lights can be easier to arrange.

Let the planting shape guide the choice

Before purchasing, distinguish continuous hedges from individual shrubs and irregular planting. Even at one hotel entrance, every zone does not have to use the same lighting format.

Site conditionWhat to assess
Neatly trimmed, repeated hedge sectionsMesh dimensions, panel boundaries and consistency between sections
Irregular shrubs with uneven foliageWhether the string-light route follows the shape and has a deliberate density pattern
A natural-looking, varied compositionEvaluate a string-light layout rather than forcing a regular grid
An orderly appearance with limited installation experienceTrial a suitably sized net to see whether it genuinely simplifies the work

We generally advise against forcing a regular net over an irregular tree crown. A poor fit can leave surplus edges or concentrate lights in one area. This is not a rejection of all net lights; it is a reminder to consider the planting rather than buying by pack dimensions alone.

Judge the display from the visitor’s position

Commercial landscaping usually has identifiable viewing directions: guests approaching a hotel, people walking along a shopping street or visitors near a mall entrance.

The same lights can look different from nearby, farther away, head-on or from the side. Do not compare proposals by lamp count alone. First identify the surfaces that need to be seen, then assess whether the proposed distribution meets the visual brief.

Trial a representative section on site and inspect it from the main approach. Look for abrupt bright clusters, unintended gaps and inconsistent transitions between areas. Include a daytime check to see how the wiring and fixing arrangements affect the appearance of the planting and its surroundings.

Once the sample is approved, retain its product reference, layout photographs and zone notes. These communicate the intended result more clearly than a general instruction to add more lights.

Choose fixing arrangements for plants, not metal sculptures

A net can find support in the contours of suitable planting. With string lights, consider whether individual sections can shift out of position. Our usual practice is to use cable ties at intervals to help retain the intended layout.

This does not mean every net needs no additional fixing. Nor should clasps or stainless-steel fasteners used on metal sculptures automatically be transferred to living plants. Confirm the approach against product instructions, plant condition and site requirements, avoiding damage to branches, compression of cables or interference with plant maintenance.

This is a purchasing and planning guide, not a replacement for project-specific installation documents.

Pay particular attention to the power-entry connection

In our experience, these outdoor applications typically use string lights and corresponding connectors marked IP65. Buyers should still verify the specifications and instructions for the actual model rather than relying on the general label “outdoor lights.”

The connection to the power supply deserves particular attention. A rating on the light string or its connectors does not automatically give an external socket or the complete power connection the same protection. Our approach is to review this connection carefully and provide an appropriate weatherproof connection enclosure where protection is required.

Have the supplier and the personnel responsible for site electrical work confirm the complete connection arrangement. This guide does not interpret IP65 as an absolute safety guarantee under every rainfall, irrigation or standing-water condition, and it provides no live-connection or wiring instructions.

Compare the proposal, not just the price per set

A useful comparison asks whether the proposals cover the same areas, deliver comparable visual goals and can be managed after installation.

Ask the supplier to explain:

  • Which surfaces are to be covered and how the site is divided into zones.
  • The specific products, dimensions and proposed layout.
  • Which connectors and accessories are included in the quotation.
  • Which parts can be replaced and which problems require replacement of a complete set.
  • How removed lights will be identified by zone for the next installation.

Do not assume products are compatible because their connectors look similar. Likewise, one replaceable lamp design does not establish how every string light can be serviced. Use the selected product’s documentation and the supplier’s confirmation.

What to send for an initial discussion

Prepare current site photographs from several angles, approximate dimensions of the intended display areas, the main viewing direction and a reference for the desired appearance. Explain whether the project is a short event, a single seasonal display or intended for repeated seasonal use.

These inputs support an initial discussion, not final installation approval. Share your site with HYCLight to discuss the lighting layout first, then confirm suitable products, supply scope and project requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Which looks better: net lights or string lights?

There is no single answer for every site. Net lights create a more regular pattern; string lights allow more variation in density. We favour string lights for varied landscaped displays, but the result depends more on design judgement and practical experience.

Can I put net lights directly over irregular shrubs?

Do not decide from mesh dimensions alone. Check how the net fits the planting. For noticeably irregular contours, we usually prefer to evaluate a string-light layout.

Do net lights need no fixing at all?

Not universally. The mesh can find support on suitable planting, but the need for additional fixing depends on the site and product requirements.

Does lamp count tell me how the finished display will look?

No. Coverage, distribution, viewing direction and the surrounding scene all influence the result. Compare a representative sample before deciding on quantities and layout.
